Captain Brian Campbell's Acceptance Speech

Mr President, Lady President, Outgoing Captain, Dave, outgoing Lady Captain, Pat, members and guests of Filey Golf Club. I would like to start by saying what an honour and a privilege it is to be elected as Captain of Filey Golf Club. I thank those members most sincerely who have sponsored and supported my nomination.

I would like to congratulate Dave and Pat, as outgoing Captains, on their year of office, and hope that I am able to emulate what they have achieved for Filey Golf Club.

I have been involved in golf, off and on, for over fifty years, being a member of several clubs. One of the better decisions I have ever made was to join Filey Golf Club and I thank Carlo Notarianni for his encouragement and support in proposing me as a member of the club. I never thought that one day I would be standing here as the new Captain!

I congratulate Dave, on his year in office. It gives me great pleasure to present Dave with the Past Captain’s Tie, which I know he will wear with pride and hold fond memories of 2011.

I am thrilled to be sharing my year of Captaincy with Pam, the Lady Captain. I am certain we will have a great year together serving Filey Golf Club. (Perhaps we may have the same relationship that Dave and Pat had – a love/hate one where Dave loved to hate Pat and Pat loved to hate Dave!!)

I would like to congratulate Phil Wiles on becoming Seniors’ Captain and know he will have a great year.

I am very pleased that Grae Robson has been elected as Junior Captain and I wish her every success in her new role and look forward to working with her.

I would also like to make mention of John Spaven and Trish Nicholson who have worked unstintingly on behalf of junior golf both at the club and schools throughout the district. I hope that this will long continue.

I must also make mention of the course itself. We have one of the best courses on the East Coast as attested by the numerous compliments received from visitors and members alike. I know this reputation is well-founded and we are all very grateful to our Course Manager, Andy and his team – I look forward to working with them in 2012.

Lastly, I could not take on this role without the support of my wife, Ursula. I have a very understanding wife, but I am certain that even her patience will be tested over the coming twelve months!

Several people have asked what radical plans I have for Filey Golf Club – my answer is “none.” I believe Filey Golf Club does not need or can afford radical change. We have a great course, club house and facilities.

In the current economic climate private members clubs are suffering through lack of members. I would like to encourage all members to be more proactive in obtaining new members to join our wonderful club.

I would like, now, to introduce Trevor Lunn as your Vice-Captain for 2012. I wish him every success in his role.

I look forward to serving you as your Captain and wish you all a very successful and fun-filled golfing year in 2012.
